Team work proposal
Group Name: Esplanade
Brief Title: ‘Serendipity’
‘The dream of reason produces monsters. Imagination deserted by reason creates impossible, useless thoughts. United with reason, imagination is the mother of all art and the source of all it’s beauty’. Author Francisco Jose De Goya
We have formed this group because we all have similar interests relating to escapism and fantasy.
Carole Anderson: creates instillations, sculptures, films and she also works with photography. Her context relates to her own memories and personal experiences, she displays this using fantasised visual representation.
Mica Bryan
Anne Notghi: Predominantly works with illustration and drawing. Works with nostalgia and portraiture and occasionally using ambiguous materials.
Nicole Wong: Works with surrealism fiction, visual metaphors, casting and film making.
Samantha Owen: Works with painting, film, illustration, photography and sculpture. Throughout her practise she has kept a strong sense of narrative crossing between humans and animals.
Michaela McKue: Works with sculpture, textiles and photography. The running themes are process and labour and the transformation of objects through making.
Kirsty Kirr: Works with video, installation and painting. Her work explores the notions of permanence and transience, endlessness and ephemerality, and the way these affect us on a human level.
Ideas and context
We want to venture in to the realm of escapism. Various mental diversions are used as an "escape" from the perceived unpleasant or banal aspects of daily life. Everyone leaves reality in their own different way, whether you bury yourself in a book or sing along to your favorite song, there are always ‘creations’ that help guide us through in our own little world, for example, the yellow brick road from the ‘The wizard of Oz’. Our exhibition will be anything but ordinary; it will be exploding with new innovative ideas, creatures, places, theories, all raw from our artist’s wildest imagination. There will be no structure and no boundaries.
Roles
Mica: The curator, arranging the art, filtering. Considering lighting, space usage, entrance and exit, organising the event e.g. contacting the gallery in question. Producing a piece of work for the exhibition.
Anne: Organising the fund raising events and producing a piece of work for the exhibition.
Sammy: Head of advertising the event e.g. producing posters, flyers, sending emails. Also producing work for the exhibition.
Carole: Team leader e.g. making sure everyone is doing their delegated jobs, making sure the work is produced and ready on time etc. collecting and editing the work summaries. Also producing work for the exhibition.
Nicole: making a promotional video/ photography. Documenting the event, production of the event. Making work for the exhibition
Michaela: Publication and the press and assisting Nicole with the documentation of the exhibition.
Kirsty: Head of public speaking as well as creating paintings for the exhibition.
Funding
We have discussed various means of raising money, these include raffles, sponsorship, cocktail sale, picnic party as well entry fee. We are considering the possibilities of selling some of the work shown. We have also found a gallery that is free to display work which will help our financial situation. We have estimated that the cost will exceed to estimate £70- £80.
Planning
The first thing we will be doing is constructing a brief outlining our running themes within this exhibition, this is to guide our working artists, consequently providing them with a general understanding of what we are hoping to create as a gallery experience. Over the Christmas period we intend to produce a proposed portfolio to present to the curators of the Lace Market Gallery in preperation for our exhibtion.
